Concrete barrier embedded within an asphalt cradle at structures is an innovative concept to reduce overall construction costs and alleviate the need for the concrete foundation of a concrete barrier system across a bridge deck.
Embedded CB at Structures has been enhanced to allow construction and maintenance teams access to bridge joints, where previously concrete barrier would be placed permanently across. This provides a low maintenance and cost efficient solution for bridges as the removable SB expansion joints give essential access to bridge joints where under previous circumstances the barrier would be broken out and replaced during the bridge maintenance schedule.
As Technical Construction File: Issue 6 highlights, the SB expansion joints can accommodate up to 100mm of movement and the concrete barrier element across the span can be reduced to 12.2m.
