A spectacular firework display took place to mark the grand opening of the Mersey Gateway.
BBS Barriers are delighted to have had two of their licenced installers heavily involved with this prestigious project which originally started in 2014. Roocroft Road Restraint Systems and Extrudakerb have both been on site ensuring that the in-situ BBS Concrete Barrier has been installed across the bridge and the approach carriageways. Various BBS Barrier products (including the Trough Wide, Variable, Embedded CB at Structures and Expansion Joints) have been installed both in the central reservation surrounding the three bridge pylons that give the bridge its unique design and also acting as a safety barrier on the sides of the bridge which is 25m above the riverbed.
The toll bridge will consist of six lanes and span 1.5 miles (2.2km) between Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire. Overall it has been a £600 million project that will allow an anticipated 20 million vehicles across the bridge each year.
David Roocroft from Roocroft Road Restraint Systems told BBS Barriers how the project was the largest infrastructure project in England outside of London and featured 8800m of BBS concrete barrier on the bridge as David quoted “this was such a landmark structure, the client requested a high quality concrete barrier, and was extremely satisfied with the BBS system installed by Roocroft Road Restraint Systems.”
The features highlighted within BBS Barriers latest ‘Use of BBS CB at Structures’ guidance document has allowed for simplified construction and will provide permanent access to bridge joints for future maintenance teams.
